In 1938, a man murdered his wife, and shortly after the murder; he committed suicide. It is believed that the man's spirit still haunts the graveyard where he was put to rest.
But that's not the entire story. There's much more.
This is the story of the curse of the grave of Carl Pruitt.
History is full of stories and tales of curses and misfortunes that befell those who disturbed or touched something that they should not have.
From ancient tombs, cemeteries to the death of Christopher Case, there are various examples that can make someone question if these are products of imagination or there are some truths to them. The curse of Carl Pruitt's grave is one of the creepiest stories.
Carl Pruitt lived in a place called Pulaski County in Kentucky. He was a carpenter known to some as Carl, but after the scary incidents that occurred after his death, he is remembered now as the Chain Strangler.
People believe that Carl Pruitt's spirit killed everyone who interacted in any way with his gravestone.
The backstory
In 1938, Carl Pruitt returned home after work. He expected his wife to be in the kitchen cooking an evening meal. Instead, he found his wife with another man in bed.
Carl Pruitt was known for his temper, and he was believed to be in an uncontrollable rage after seeing his wife with another man.
While the man escaped somehow through the window, the wife couldn't escape and felt Carl Pruitt's rage to its fullest. He strangled his wife to death with all his might with a piece of chain.
He killed his wife in pure rage, and after looking at his wife's lifeless body for some time, he took his own life with a pistol.
The wife's family and the town were shaken by the vicious murder and suicide. The wife's family decided to bury Chris Pruitt and his wife in separate cemeteries.
Nobody knew where Carl Pruitt was buried exactly, but people know that it's in a different town, far from his wife's resting place.
In a very bizarre manner, grasses started growing around Chris Pruitt's gravestone. People say that grasses formed chain-shaped patterns over his gravestone. They also noticed the discolouration of the headstone as well.
With time, the grasses in chain-shaped patterns began to grow and seemed to be forming links like those in chains. People started to feel something strange lurking inside the grave and requested the locals to remove it. Few of them warned the locals that the grave may be cursed and can bring misfortunes to people. Authorities paid no attention to these warnings.
In less than a month, a teenager named James Collins took his friends to the cemetery to prove that there is no ghost. James threw a stone at the headstone on the grave, which took a chip off it. The boys then cycled away, fearing that the groundskeeper or locals could create problems for them.
James sped out of the cemetery at such speed that he lost control of his bike and collided with a tree. In a strange way, the chain of the cycle came out loose, got wrapped around James' throat, and strangled James to death.
Later the friends of James couldn't show the minor damage of the headstone, which they witnessed when James threw a rock at it.
The story of James Collin's death started to travel, convincing many of Carl Pruitt's vengeful spirit and curse of the grave.
A few weeks later, James Collins' mother tried to destroy Carl Pruitt's headstone with an axe. There were eyewitnesses who stated that Collin's mother broke the headstone into many pieces.
A few days after the incident, people found Collin's mother dead, strangled, and hanging from a clothesline in her backyard. The headstone was found intact after a few days.
These deaths convinced the believers more, and soon the curse of Carl Pruitt's grave became a legend. The small town was now swarming with people who came to see the infamous grave.
A frustrated farmer who was riding past the graveyard shot at the headstone with his pistol. As soon as the farmer shot, his wagon lost balance, and the farmer was thrown off the carriage to a trace chain. His neck snapped instantly, and he died on the spot.
A local congressman assigned two cops to investigate the incidents happening around the graveyard. The police officers supposedly mocked the possibilities of the curse and even took pictures of themselves in degrading poses around the headstone.
As the police officers left the burial site, they were supposedly distracted by something glowing. One of them said that it looked like a ball of light, which followed them. At that point, they were scared, and as they sped up, they crashed the car into a fence. Before the car hit the fence, one of them jumped out of the car.
As the police officer got up and went to see if his partner was okay, he saw a chain between the fence posts severed his partner's head completely.
As the death count rose to four, the legend of Carl Pruitt's grave became more popular. However, a man called Arthur Lewis didn't believe any of it, and he was determined to prove it as a lie.
Arthur's claim gathered popularity, and a crowd gathered around to witness how he proves all the stories false. Arthur took a large hammer and started to hit the headstone with it. The crowd's anticipation turned to anguish soon.
Suddenly everyone heard Arthur's scream and rescuers rushed in to help. Before the rescuers could reach Arthur, he was already dead. They found Arthur's neck strangled by a huge chain that was on the cemetery's entrance gate. Strangely, the headstone was found intact later.
The number of deaths increased, but the authorities refused to admit that the grave was killing people. Many removed the remains of their loved ones from the cemetery.
True or just an urban legend?
The legend of Carl Pruitt's grave ran deep until 1958. In 1958, the graveyard was redeveloped in order to make way for a strip mine. During the redevelopment, Carl Pruitt's remains were completely concealed. No more deaths related to the grave of Carl Pruitt were reported after that.
Many believe that Carl Pruitt's body was moved to another location years before the work of redevelopment started.
If Carl Pruitt's grave was removed, is it possible that he is resting until someone disturbs his grave again?
The stories of Carl Pruitt's grave are still discussed in various forums and books, though many events differ in detail and time. We can never know if these stories are true or just an urban legend.
