The universe of DC is now more than 80 years old! The DC universe re-invented or rebooted itself many times over the few years. However, the reboots weren't absolute, which means that the older stories weren't scrapped completely and discarded. In fact, the most important and impactful events are still relevant and are used as references even now.
We handpicked 9 of the most impactful DC comic books so that you know what major changes the DC universe went through over the years. Additionally, you would also know how the events shaped the DC multiverse and paved the way for more awesome storylines.
Let's begin!
Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985)
This is hands-down the first original biggest DC event that every comic book fan knows about. The 1985 series by George Pérez and Marv Wolfman made the possibilities of a multiverse popular!
Now that you see every other superhero story on screen trying to pull a "multiverse" plot, it was made popular by the Crisis on Infinite Earths!
The series changed the entire landscape of the DC universe and made DC Comics the first comic book company to reboot their entire continuity.
Crisis on Infinite Earths killed a lot of characters that included some of the DC A-listers. This event also cleaned up the continuity of the DC Comics that was 50 years old.
Death of Superman (1992)
Despite the fact that Death of Superman was one of the most criticized Superman storylines, it remains as one of DC's iconic comic books till today. The reason is pretty simple, and that's what the title and the story are all about - The death of Superman!
Death of Superman is about Superman and Doomsday. Doomsday defeats Superman and beats him to death! This landmark event inspired the climax of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Batman: Knightfall (1993)
Batman: Knightfall is undoubtedly one of the greatest Batman comics ever, as well as an important story arc for the entire DC universe.
Finally, Bruce Wayne comes face to face with a foe that outsmarted as well as physically broke the Batman. Batman: Knightfall also tells the story of Bane and what motivated him to defeat the Dark Knight.
Bane's planning and strategizing ability took the caped crusader by surprise. The event isn't just about Bane breaking Batman's back but also about Batman and his legacy.
Flash of Two Worlds (1961)
While Crisis on Infinite Earths made the concept of multiverse trendy, Flash of Two Worlds teased about it in 1961!
As the name suggests, the story had two flashes, and the other one was from a different earth - Earth-Two. In Flash of Two Worlds, Barry Allen finds himself in another Earth or reality where he sees Jay Garrick's Flash, who he knew as a fictional comic book character.
Flash of Two Worlds explained that each DC earth vibrates at a specific frequency, different from the other, which borrows from time's theoretical science. With this storyline, adventures involving traveling between many worlds became DC's distinguishing and defining element.
Final Crisis (2008)
Grant Morrison's Final Crisis is a story where the DC superheroes go against Darkseid, who is hell-bent on controlling reality itself.
Final Crisis is truly a masterpiece that offers some mind-bending concepts. This DC event also showed Batman's determination as he finds his way out after he gets lost in time.
Final Crisis also influenced Scott Snyder's Dark Nights: Metal, another great DC comic book that you must try!
Dark Knights: Metal (2017)
Scott Snyder's Dark Knights: Metal is easily one of the boldest and best Batman storylines ever. However, the events of Dark Knights: Metal doesn't just affect Batman and his world but the entire DC universe. The story is insanely fun and introduces us to the "Dark Multiverse" and its dangers!
And if that doesn't impress you enough, here's the biggest reason - evil Batmen! Yes, the dark multiverse brings with it some of the most twisted and dangerous versions of Batman, including the Batman who laughs!
Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004)
Green Lantern: Rebirth resurrects the entire Green Lantern franchise and establishes writer Geoff Johns as one of the best DC writers of all time.
Green Lantern: Rebirth brings back Hal Jordan from the dead and restores him as one of DC's main superheroes. The storyline also re-establishes the Green Lantern Corps.
The story is intriguing, fast-paced, and builds up the Green Lantern mythos all over again but in a new and fresh way.
Flashpoint (2011)
The events of Flashpoint turns the DC universe upside down and reboots it as "The New 52."
The story revolves mainly around Barry Allen, who travels back in time to save his mother but accidentally changes the history. Batman is not Bruce Wayne, Kal-El's spacecraft was not discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent, Aquaman and Wonder Woman are at war, and almost every superhero's backstory is altered.
Now Flash must undo what he did, but how? All answers are in this epic DC event, Flashpoint.
Flashpoint is written by Geoff Johns and it’s undoubtedly an event that you wouldn't want to miss.
Rebirth (2016)
After the New 52, Rebirth rebooted the DC universe in May 2016. However, it isn't a reboot exactly as there are links to the New 52 events. Therefore, in a manner of speaking, Rebirth can be considered to be the new phase in the DC universe.
Rebirth resurrects Wally West and unites him with Barry Allen, brings back the classic Superman, and brings in the Watchmen! While Rebirth restores some of the main elements, it also opens up to exciting possibilities.
